Dr. Hugh Roberts is arguably the leading analyst of Algerian politics in the English-speaking world. For the past five years, he has served as director of the North Africa Project for International Crisis Group, publishing a series of groundbreaking reports on topics from Political Islam to the Western Sahara conflict. His book The Battlefield: Algeria 1988-2002: Studies in a broken polity, is the insider’s guide to Algeria in the 1990’s. The full title of his presentation is “Pre-Colonial Political Organization and the Algerian Political Tradition.”
